BP inches ahead in latest bid to control oil spill

Notapor sunday31 el 03 Jun 2010, 22:08

Louisiana (Reuters) - Robot submarines plying the dark, frigid depths of the Gulf of Mexico made halting progress in BP's latest bid to siphon off oil belching from its ruptured wellhead, but tar balls and other debris from the spill posed new threats to the region's shoreline. While BP Plc inched ahead with its new plan to contain the undersea gushercheap MLB jersey, CEO Tony Hayward retreated from yet another public relations gaffe -- apologizing for his widely reported remark that "I want my life back.
The BP oil spill, which began in Aprilwholesale MLB jersey, is causing an ecological and economic catastrophe along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
BP's latest attempted fix hit a snag on Wednesday when a diamond-tipped saw got lodged in the deep-sea pipe through which oil is billowing into the Gulf. But BP freed the cutting tool after several hours of tricky maneuvering of its robot submarines, paving the way for the cutting process to resumewholesale NFL jersey, a source familiar with the work told Reuters.
In European trading on Thursday morning, BP shares rose 3 percent. The British energy giant's stock, down by about a third since the accident began, had stabilized on Wednesday after sharp declines in London and Wall Street on Tuesday. BP said it will speak with analysts on Friday.
"People seem to be latching onto some sort of optimism the current operations are going to be successful, really, it's still very earlyyouth MLB jersey," said Arbuthnot Securities analyst Dougie Youngson. "This procedure is fundamentally very risky and it's not over yet."
Many thousands of fishermen, shrimpers and other seafood workers have been idled for weeks by government-imposed fishing restrictions that were expanded on Wednesday to cover 37 percent of U.S. federal waters in the Gulf.
In the struggle to minimize shoreline encroachment of oil, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal won White House approval on Wednesday for a controversial plan to essentially manufacture several new barrier islands off his state with sand dredged from the sea floorNFL jersey. Louisiana has been hardest hit so far by the oil slick.
TOXIC GOO
The fragmented, far-flung oil slick posed a growing threat to several parts of Gulf Coast. Toxic goo from the spill crept to within 10 miles of Florida's northwest panhandle, where officials said it could make landfall by Friday.
One of the first populated areas soiled earlier by tar balls from the spill, the popular Alabama resort town and bird sanctuary of Dauphin Island, was hit this week with a new wave of oil blobs that also started washing up in Mississippi.
The spill was unleashed by an April 20 explosion that wrecked the BP-contracted Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig and killed 11 crewmen. The last best hope of gaining some control over the worst U.S. oil spill in history was concentrated a mile beneath the surface of the Gulf.
After a fruitless three-day attempt to plug up the crippled wellhead with drilling mud, BP embarked late on Tuesday on a new strategy to curtail the flow of oil that has been escaping into the Gulf at the rate of up to 19,000 barrels (800,000 gallons/3 million liters) a day.
The latest plan calls for cutting away the leaking riser pipe protruding from the failed blowout preventer, then lowering a containment cap onto the remaining wellhead assembly to trap much of the escaping oil and funnel it to the surface.
The operation was expected to take 72 hours to complete. Officials have warned that the flow of oil could temporarily increase by as much as 20 percent between the time the riser pipe is severed and the containment cap is lowered into place.
BP does not expect to be able to fully choke off the flow until August, when two emergency relief wells are due for completion.
TAX BREAKS
In Pittsburgh, President Barack Obama called for an end to oil company tax breaks in the wake of the spill and pledged to find Senate support for a bill to overhaul U.S. energy policy.
Jindal announced approval by the Obama administration for a plan to build five large offshore berms with sand dredged from the sea floor to help shield Louisiana's fragile coastline.
Jindal, a rising star in the Republican Party, has accused the government of being too slow to respond to the crisis, heightening the political pressure that Democrat Obama has faced in confronting one of the key tests of his presidency.
U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told BP to pay for the five berms in addition to one he approved last week. BP said it will pay the estimated $360 million cost to build them.
The outlook for BP was further clouded as the market barometer of the company's risk of defaulting on its debt hit a new high on Wednesday, reflecting growing concerns about BP's exposure to the mounting costs of the Gulf spill.
Credit default swaps protecting BP's debt jumped 87 basis points to a record 255 basis points, or $255,000 per year to insure $10 million for five years, according to Markit Intraday. By comparison, those swaps stood at about 100 basis points last Friday and 42 basis points in April.
The cost of insuring the debt of rig operator Transocean and Anadarko Petroleum Corp, which owns a 25 percent stake in the blown-out well, also reached record levels on Wednesday.

Tom Brady to Holdout

Notapor sunday31 el 24 Jul 2010, 22:57

I know it sounds pretty crazy doesn’t it, butESPN’s John Clayton is really pushingthe idea that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady may holdout.NHL jerseys
I guess it holds some weight even though I doubt it even comes close to happening.
Clayton said on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike” radio show,“They’re nowhere close, and Tom has made it clear to management that he doesn’t want to give any sacrifices. He wants top dollar, and he’s earned top dollar.”nfl jerseys

He continued, “You’re taking about the two clearest Hall of Famers of this era, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. And last we checked, Tom has three Super Bowl rings; Peyton Manning has one. Tom, I’m sure, will get less ultimately than Peyton Manning, but he doesn’t want to take less than what Tom Brady should naturally be able receive.”
Sadly even after all that Clayton himself won’t even predict that Brady will hold out. He says its a “possibility.”ed hardy clothing
I think that in itself shows how much weight Clayton’s comments hold. The only question is why does he keep pressing the notion?
He made the initial comment on June 13 saying that Brady had to decide whether he wanted to holdout or report to camp.
Now a week later he still floats that possibility. Is he just looking for extra publicity here?
Is Clayton feeling a little pressure with Adam Schefter now being the big dog when it comes to ESPN’s NFL experts now?louboutin shoes
Hoping maybe that if Brady does holdout he can take credit for breaking the news?
I don’t think New England fans have anything to worry about.
Brady loves football and the Patriots too much to holdout. In fact Tom Curran of CSNNE.com reports that Brady was expected in town this weekend to get settled in.
Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, also reports that there is virtually no chance a holdout happens:@YahooSportsNFL : Any talk about a Tom Brady holdout is speculation. Will not happen. Regardless of contract situation, he’s not holding out this year.
Clayton is right in one aspect thou, Brady is not going to take less then what he’s worth.
He’s a three time Super Bowl Champion but to truly get what he’s currently worth, he needs to be in camp and have another huge season.jordan shoes
Under Bill Belichick the Patriots have not been the team to reward you on past success. If Brady holds out and then dropped a dud on the Pats, I’m sure they’d take that into consideration.
For him to get what he is worth, he’ll be in camp proving once again he’s a leader and more importantly, a winner.

When and Where Will A-Rod Hit No. 600

Notapor sunday31 el 25 Jul 2010, 21:47

When Alex Rodriguez went from 499 homers to 500, it took him nine games and 28 at-bats to do it. Now that he’s at 599, let’s take a look at how long to expect it to take this time.
If it took him another nine games, that would set him up for No. 600 on July 31st in Tampa against the Rays. This time could be different, though.NHL jerseys
Since 2007, when he hit no. 500, A-Rod has transformed from a “me first” egotistical player to one who is more relaxed, looks like he genuinely has fun, and cares more about winning than personal stats. In other words, it won’t necessarily take him nine games this time.
So let’s look at this realistically. This season, he has 16 homers in 338 at-bats, or a home run just about every 21 at-bats.
With an average of 3.84 at-bats per game, that puts him at about five and a half games before he smacks 600. So if he kept up his season average of homers per at-bat he would do it either Tuesday or Wednesday in Cleveland.nfl jerseys
The thing is, these statistics might as well get thrown out the window, because the Yankees are currently facing the same team A-Rod hit No. 500 against, the Kansas City Royals.
Not only are the Royals in almost the same situation they were in back in 2007, pitching wise, they actually have the same pitcher, Kyle Davies, who gave up No. 500 pitching tomorrow.
So maybe A-Rod homers on Saturday. However, that might be homer No. 601, because before he faces off against Davies, A-Rod faces off against another Royals pitcher whom he’s had success against: Brian Bannister.
He’s only faced Bannister over seven at-bats, but he’s 4-for-7 against him with three home runs. You’ve got to like those odds.louboutin shoes
I’ve already pointed out that Alex is likely to hit No. 600 any time between tonight and July 31st, but where exactly is he going to hit the home run?
SeatGeek.com has actually done some research. They’ve determined that Alex hits most of his homers to left field, which is typical for a right handed power hitter.
The most likely section that he’ll hit it to is section 136 in Yankee Stadium. He’s got a 9.0 percent chance at hitting one. Next is section 135 with a 7.8 percent chance. It then goes 134 (6.9%), 235 (4.7%), and 236 (3.7%).
So if you are looking to catch A-Rod’s 600th homer, head over to Stubhub and start buying up tickets in those sections.jordan shoes
However, if you are really serious about landing the prized ball, you should look into “The Money Seat.” SeatGeek has actually determined that section 135, row 18, seat 6 is the one seat in the entire stadium where A-Rod is most likely to hit the ball.
SeatGeek puts A-Rod’s chances of homering at Yankee Stadium at 54.3 percent right now. I’ve been in touch with them and they’ve told me that should he fail to homer at home this weekend, they will come up with the numbers of where his historic homer will land in either Cleveland or Tampa.
So if he doesn’t get the job done soon, check back before you book your flight to follow the Yankees on the road.
